Resort description
The Igalo Institute is one of the largest and most renowned treatment centers in the Balkans, where doctors of various specialties work. Rheumatologists, neurologists, physiatrists and other specialists manage each patient comprehensively. The Institute is a scientific medical center, not just a clinic. It not only applies treatment according to proven standards but also independently develops and implements new rehabilitation methods, especially in the field of physical medicine, as well as providing physician training.
One of the key features of the resort is the region’s natural factors. Local therapeutic mud and the low-mineralization medicinal-table water “Igalka,” which comes from springs at the mouth of the Sutorina River, have been used here for a long time.
The mud is extracted from the bottom of the Igalo Bay. It has a high content of minerals and biologically active substances. The mud is applied in various ways: as the body compresses and is used for therapeutic baths. This therapy helps improve the condition of patients with joint and spinal diseases, neurological problems and rheumatic diseases. The effectiveness of these methods has been proven over 75 years of the Institute’s work.
In addition to rehabilitation and prevention programs, the Institute offers wellness services aimed at maintaining a healthy lifestyle, correcting bad habits, combating excess weight and stress.
The Igalo Institute resort is suitable for patients who are recommended treatment for inflammatory diseases of the joints and spine (arthrosis, arthritis, osteochondrosis, disc hernias), rehabilitation after injuries and orthopedic surgeries (including endoprosthetics), recovery after heart attacks and strokes, and treatment of peripheral nervous system diseases.
Medical centers
Igalo Medical Center
The Igalo Medical Center has five buildings with a total area of 90,000 sq. m and is a pioneer in modern physical and preventive medicine, rehabilitation, thalassotherapy and wellness, and also serves as a leading international rehabilitation center for children, adults and the elderly.
Each rehabilitation program begins with a medical examination by a physical medicine specialist. During treatment, the patient is accompanied by a team of doctors of various specialties (physiatrists, rheumatologists, neurologists, cardiologists, pulmonologists, pediatricians), physiotherapists and nurses.
The following types of rehabilitation are available to patients:
| Rheumatological | Procedures using natural therapeutic factors (Igalo mud and mineral water) to achieve stable remission, reduce pain and restore joint mobility. |
| Cardiological | Controlled physical activity, diet therapy and psychological support aimed at reducing the risk of recurrent cardiovascular complications. |
| Respiratory | Respiratory kinesiotherapy, interval training, inhalations, drainage techniques, swimming and relaxation techniques to improve pulmonary ventilation and quality of life. |
| Neurological | Kinesiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy and psychological assistance, electrotherapy and hydrotherapy for the maximum possible restoration of lost functions after strokes, traumatic brain and spinal injuries, multiple sclerosis and other diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. |
| Post-sports injuries | Combining natural factors with modern kinesiotherapy and physiotherapy methods for injury prevention and for the fastest and safest return to sports activity. |
| Musculoskeletal | Kinesiotherapy, hydrokinesiotherapy, manual massage, mud compresses and mechanotherapy aimed at restoring range of motion, strengthening the muscle corset and correcting incorrect movement habits. |
| Pediatric | A program for children from birth to 16 years with diseases of the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, consequences of birth injuries, developmental delay, rheumatological and respiratory pathologies. Sessions are conducted with the active participation of parents. The program includes kinesiotherapy, hydrotherapy, massage, mud therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy assistance. |
The Igalo Institute also offers several preventive programs that focus on maintaining physical, mental and emotional well-being. The programs include individually selected therapies, exercises and dietary nutrition.
Main wellness programs:
- Anti-stress: relaxation exercises and techniques aimed at reducing stress levels, eliminating burnout syndrome and chronic fatigue.
- Metabolic syndrome prevention: individually tailored diet with calorie control, regular monitoring of body weight, blood pressure and laboratory parameters, teaching proper nutrition.
- Osteoporosis prevention program: therapeutic exercises in the gym and pool, magnetotherapy, mineral baths and mud therapy.
- Weight loss program: individually tailored diet, intensive physical activity in the gym and thermal pools for body contouring under medical supervision.
The Igalo Institute offers three medical packages — Light, Balance and Intensive. They differ in the number of procedures per day, but not in their composition.
IgaloSpa Wellness Center
IgaloSpa is a balneotherapy center at the Igalo Institute. The following treatment methods are used here: underwater jet massage, sea salt baths, carbon dioxide and pearl baths with essential oils, sauna, hammam and a pool with heated mineral water (33—34 °C). Various types of massage are available — lymphatic drainage, reflexology, Ayurvedic and Tai Chi (moving meditation). Cosmetic face and body care programs using therapeutic mud and mineral water, restorative baths and cleansing procedures are also offered.
Standard contraindications to procedures and medical programs include: acute and infectious diseases, malignant neoplasms, severe cardiovascular pathologies, pregnancy, bleeding and blood clotting disorders, active autoimmune and inflammatory processes of any localization, open wounds, as well as individual intolerance to components of the mud and mineral water. The final decision on the possibility and scope of treatment is made by the Institute’s physician individually for each patient based on examination and analysis of medical records, which ensures the safety of therapy.

Frequently asked questions
The main factor is the strictly medical approach. The Igalo Institute, founded in 1949, is a large academic medical institution. Here, a full diagnosis and examination by a doctor is carried out first, then an individual program is prescribed, and the effectiveness of the treatment is monitored throughout the entire course. The therapy is based on powerful natural factors — therapeutic mud and mineral water, the use of which is supplemented by modern physiotherapeutic methods.
The Igalo Institute offers three meal options to choose from when booking: BB (breakfast only), HB (half-board — breakfast and dinner) and FB (full board — breakfast, lunch and dinner). If necessary, as prescribed by a doctor, the diet may be adjusted according to the patient’s medical indications.
The Igalo Institute operates year-round, but the peak season (July—August) coincides with the mass tourist flow on the coast. If your goal is quiet treatment and rehabilitation, the optimal period is considered the off-season: from October to May. During these months, all medical and infrastructure facilities continue to operate as normal, and the number of tourists is significantly lower, which contributes to a more comfortable and peaceful recovery process.
Yes, the infrastructure of the Igalo Institute is fully adapted to accommodate patients with disabilities. Moreover, the institute specializes in severe neurological rehabilitation (including recovery from spinal cord injuries with paralysis), which implies the availability of special equipment and trained staff to work with patients.
