San Raffaele is a multidisciplinary university hospital. Its operating rooms and departments are equipped with recent technology, including PET, PET-CT, PET-MRI, CyberKnife and Gamma Knife radiosurgery devices, the innovative RapidArc radiotherapy technology, and tomotherapy.
The hospital’s primary focus is oncology. The department provides care for malignant tumors of any location. Each week, a multidisciplinary medical board convenes to determine treatment programs. The board includes oncologists, immunologists, diagnosticians, surgeons, and radiotherapy specialists.
Obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive medicine department annually assists numerous couples struggling with infertility, offering access to the most advanced treatment methods. Services include in vitro fertilization (IVF) with blastocyst culture, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and cryopreservation of oocytes and ovarian tissue to preserve fertility.
The cardiac surgery department performs modern procedures to restore and replace heart valves, using transcatheter systems like MitraClip and transapical systems like Tiara, as well as the Perceval sutureless prosthesis. Minimally invasive Cobra Fusion catheters are used for surgical ablation of atrial fibrillation.
The hospital’s ophthalmologists specialize in modern and safe treatment methods. For example, cataract surgeries are performed using phacoemulsification, where ultrasound is used to fragment and aspirate the cataract. This method is the most effective and painless, conducted on an outpatient basis.
San Raffaele is also a research center affiliated with the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. It regularly conducts clinical trials and studies in various fields of medicine. Research is focused on understanding disease mechanisms and developing effective treatment methods.
