University Hospital Freiburg is one of the oldest medical institutions in Europe, opened more than 560 years ago. It is a multidisciplinary clinic, so it provides diagnostics and treatment in almost all areas. All oncology departments of the University Clinic of Freiburg are united in an innovative, technological oncology center. Patients are treated by a team of doctors from different specialties, including related areas (radiologists, ultrasound specialists). A consilium of doctors develops an individual plan for each clinical case. In the Department of Ophthalmology of the University Clinic Freiburg specialists treat cataract and glaucoma, age-related and traumatic retinal dystrophies, as well as perform surgeries for myopia. A unique feature of the department is its own cornea bank, which can be used by patients in need of transplantation. In the urology department of the University Hospital Freiburg, patients with prostate tumors undergo high-tech surgeries such as HOLEP, aqua-ablation and Da Vinci. The minimally invasive format avoids complications and allows for a faster recovery. A big step towards innovative solutions has been made by the specialists of the Department of Nuclear Medicine at the University Hospital Freiburg: at the moment, the clinic is successfully treating benign and malignant thyroid diseases with radioactive iodine, radioligand therapy for neuroendocrine tumors, as well as selective internal radiotherapy for liver masses.
