Robert Timme
About the doctor
Dr. Robert Timme is medical director of the Department of Internal Medicine, specializing in gastroenterology, hepatology, endocrinology and infectious diseases at the University Hospital Freiburg. His department treats patients with gastrointestinal tumors, viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. His area of professional and scientific interest is the study of immune responses during hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. His research group has provided new insights into the mechanisms of T-cell function in viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma: HLA-B27 antibodies are protective in HCV infection, but virus escape is a major factor in T-cell failure in chronic HCV infection. Therefore, the development of novel cell culture models of virus-specific CD8+ T cells may lead to partial restoration of immunity. Dr. Robert Timme has been a speaker at the BMBF Advanced Clinician Scientist: IMMediate – Immune-Mediated Diseases program from 2021 to the present, and has been the project leader of the H2020 IP-cure B – Interventions for the treatment of hepatitis B infection (EU-Project) since 2020
