He has contributed significantly to the development of abdominal surgery, pioneering techniques such as oral cholecystectomy, gastric and part of the colon tumor removal via the vaginal route (NOTES — Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery), and the SILS approach in bariatric surgery (single incision laparoscopic surgery). Moreover, he performed the first-ever rectal surgery through the anal opening, which led to the creation of the TaTME method, now regarded as the best approach for colorectal cancer.
