Professor Carlo Pappone is an Italian cardiologist, Head of the Clinical Arrhythmology Department and the Electrophysiology Laboratory at Policlinico San Donato (Milan). His clinical and scientific experience in the field of arrhythmology spans more than 30 years, and the total number of surgeries he has performed exceeds 130,000.

Professional interests include:

  • Prevention of sudden cardiac death
  • Treatment of ventricular arrhythmias
  • Brugada syndrome
  • Atrial fibrillation

One of Professor Pappone’s most significant contributions to global cardiology is the development of a treatment method for atrial fibrillation, known worldwide as the “Pappone Approach.” It is based on circumferential pulmonary vein ablation and has become the global standard for the treatment of persistent and chronic atrial fibrillation. It is used in cardiac surgery centers around the world.

Professor Pappone is one of the world’s leading experts on Brugada syndrome — a dangerous hereditary condition that is a common cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. Dr. Pappone developed and successfully applies a minimally invasive procedure — epicardial catheter ablation. According to data published in 2020, the procedure demonstrated 100% effectiveness.

Annually, his team performs approximately 4,000 procedures (of which about 3,000 are ablations and 1,000 are implantations), which is one of the highest rates in the world for an electrophysiology laboratory.

Professor Carlo Pappone is also the author of more than 350 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
