Resort description
The Blue Lagoon resort is a geothermal complex among black volcanic rocks in the southwestern part of Iceland.
The heart of the complex is a sky-blue lagoon. Here, sea and underground fresh water naturally mix, forming a hot spring with a temperature of about 37°C. The geothermal field is rich in minerals, silica, and blue and green algae.
From a medical point of view, the Blue Lagoon complex is suitable for patients with psoriasis, eczema, dry and atopic skin, as well as people with pronounced stress, chronic fatigue, and age-related changes. Individual programs are selected by the doctors of the resort’s dermatological clinic taking into account the patient’s medical documentation.
Two accommodation options are available on the resort’s territory.
The Silica Hotel 4* Superior
The Silica Hotel is located among black lava fields about a 10-minute walk from the main Blue Lagoon. Guests receive unlimited access to the private Silica Lagoon with geothermal water at a temperature of 37-40°C and the opportunity to visit the main lagoon according to selected accommodation packages.
The Retreat Hotel 5* Superior
The first and only resort in Iceland in the “5 Star Superior” category according to the national Vakinn certification system. Located directly at the main lagoon. Also located here are the private Retreat Lagoon and the underground Retreat Spa wellness complex with procedures based on silica mud, mineral water, and algae.
Medical centers
Wellness Center Blue Lagoon Spa
The center’s wellness programs are based on the use of the region’s natural resources: mineral salts, silica mud, and sea algae, which have a powerful regenerating effect.
Procedures include in-water and on-land massages, salt scrubs, contrast showers, and wraps, which are performed using cosmetics from the Blue Lagoon Skin Care own line.
Dermatological Clinic Blue Lagoon
The clinic is located in the Silica Hotel building, a 10-minute walk from the main lagoon. It specializes in the treatment of psoriasis and eczema through bathing in geothermal water and ultraviolet light therapy.
After a series of immersions in geothermal water, patients undergo a course of narrowband UVB phototherapy under the supervision of a nurse and dermatologist. The treatment protocols use therapeutic products from the Blue Lagoon Skin Care line, developed specifically for skin with psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
The course of procedures begins with a shower using algae extract and a mineral gel, followed by a visit to the thermal pool. During bathing, silica mud is applied to the skin, which cleanses and renews it, while sea algae nourish and soften it. Mineral salts have a calming and strengthening effect on the body, helping to reduce stress levels and chronic fatigue.
Retreat Spa
An underground wellness complex with an area of about 2300 m², built into lava rocks and connected to the private Retreat Lagoon. It consists of thermal and relaxation zones, rooms with heated loungers.
Contraindications for visiting the resort’s thermal and wellness centers:
- Open wounds and active skin infections
- Severe cardiovascular diseases

- Oncology in the active phase

Frequently asked questions
The Silica Hotel at Blue Lagoon is a more intimate 4* Superior resort with a private Silica Lagoon and walking distance to the main lagoon. The Retreat Hotel is 5* Superior with suites, a private Retreat Lagoon, and an underground Retreat Spa. The first is suitable for a quiet holiday, the second — for premium programs with a high level of service.
Retreat Lagoon in Iceland is a private part of the geothermal lagoon, accessible only to patients of The Retreat Hotel and patients of Retreat Spa.
For a medical trip to Blue Lagoon for psoriasis, it is worth preparing extracts from a dermatologist, a list of medications being taken, and photographs of rashes. It is important to discuss with your doctor the permissibility of UVB phototherapy and the discontinuation of certain ointments before the trip. This helps the clinic’s specialists quickly select a safe and effective treatment protocol.
The minimum length of a medical trip to Blue Lagoon for psoriasis is recommended at 7 nights. In a week, it is possible to assess the skin’s reaction to the water and silica mud and adjust the care regimen. For pronounced manifestations, doctors usually recommend extending the course to 10-14 nights for a more lasting effect.
It is most advantageous to plan a vacation and treatment at Blue Lagoon during the off-season periods — from October to April, excluding the Christmas dates.
